In the mid-1870s, the then Master, the Hon. Francis Scott commissioned SUH subscriber, Edwin Douglas RA, to paint a portrait of 'Comrade', his favourite hound. The meet card being carried by 'Comrade' is annotated 'Two days only on account of the state of the ground' - plus ça change!

A new arrival in the Archives: a meet at The Hand-in-Hand, Boxhill, c. 1900-10. This must have been quite a hack from Kennels in Great Bookham ... ...

Huntsman, Harry Ashley, brings the Surrey Union foxhounds to the meet on a frosty Christmas Eve. The year is 1931 and the location probably Anstie Grange.

The Holmwood Station Master and the porter, aided and abetted by what looks to be the fireman off the engine, lend a hand as hounds are unloaded. The locomotive is a Stroudley tank engine, probably a D-1 or possibly an A-1 "Terrier" - which would be most appropriate!

Surrey Union Foxhounds the whole company travelled from Leatherhead to Holmwood below Dorking; here the hunts men, women, horses and hounds were ready to start after a space of ten minutes."
This is the first photo, showing the station yard at Holmwood and the down platform beyond. Note the activity near the first vehicle of the train, next to the locomotive [to the left of the picture] - this will be the subject of the next post, tomorrow.

A very wet day from Stanhill Gate on Saturday, 15 December 1935. A press report in 'The Morning Post', the following Tuesday, recorded that, "Captain J.S. Judd, who acts as honorary whipper-in, was hunting hounds as H. Ashley, the huntsman, was laid up". It seems that they had a first rate day, including a hunt of an hour, with a 3½-mile point, that ended in C&H country. In this picture [from left to right] are Captain Judd, riding 'Braemy'; Les Amess 2nd whipper-in; Nigel Tritton, later a joint-Master of the SUH; Bill Hazeltine and Kathleen Noad.
